Our feature for our music spotlight is a friend of mine, Artis Delano. The 22 year old St. Kitts and Nevis native is one of many talents, from being a ball on the basketball court and now a rapper.  Artis is definitely not one that is coming into the game half way.  He is coming at full force, doing things that people in his field haven't done. If you like individuality when it comes to music, then this should be a treat!

How did you get started in music?

Growing up in the church is how I got my start. My father is a pastor/author, so its in my blood to write and compose.  I was just drawn to the melodies instead of the pulpit.

What type of genre would you say your music is?

Hip-Hop. I'm a grassroot hip-hop fan. I'm a fan of the underground and my music displays that.

What type of messages are you sending through your music?

All my songs have a message. Rap and Hip-Hop as a genre is always demonized because of the quote on quote lifestyle choices a lot of us portray. If you really take the time to listen to the lyrics, I'm sure some songs will resonate with a lot of personal things everyone is going through whether it be struggle, joy and happiness or something that you can just kick back and chill to.

How does your music differ from other young artists on the come up?

I believe my music is unique to me.  When I say that, I mean that when you see me or associate with me you can feel a sense of transparency.  That's what sets me apart.  I'm not trying to be something I'm not.

Where do you see your music going in five years?

Honestly I couldn't tell you.  I would like to be somewhere well off just like every starving artist but I try to focus on my life and not just box myself as a rapper because at the end of the day I want to do so much more than music.

Who are some of your influences, both musically and non- musically?

I would say the cliche "Biggie & Pac", but nah haha. I'm influenced by life experiences, I don't wanna be a flavor of the month rapper, I want to be a complete artist.  Musically I admire the sounds of old school heavyweights; Mac Dre (RIP), KRS One, Run DMC, Tribe Called Quest and Big L, just to name a few.  I also enjoy some sounds outside of my genre such as Jill Scott, Corinne Bailey Rae and Sade. I could go on and on.  Outside of music I was definitely influenced by my family first and foremost and historical figure, Malcolm X.

What are your thoughts on today's music and how do you think it has evolved in the last 10 years?

Music is always evolving, and if you love it you will evolve with it just like anything else in life.  It becomes a part of you.  I don't LIKE everything out there, but I do appreciate it.

Where did you get the name "Artis Delano" from?

My full government name is Joshua Delano Norman, I came about about Artis Delano or (Art Is) Delano to signify that I am art. Artis Delano mean "Art Is Me"

If you weren't doing music, what do you think you would be doing?

Hardest question to answer, haha.  As I kid I wanted to be a baller, so I'd probably be chasing hoop dreams.

Where can our readers find your work?

I have a video on YouTube, it's a freestyle video and the first video that my Dj, Dj Dynamite and I put together.  It's nothing special but it's a cool lil start.  I also have a Mixtape out now titled 'POV Of A '92 Kid'.  That's available on datpiff, hotnewhiphop and on my personal Bandcamp page. Check it out.
